During the network meeting of Lusatian filmmakers Łužycafilm in December 2020, the idea of a SummerFilmAcademy and a „common shooting period“ in the summer met with a good response among the participants.

We want to create an atmosphere for an intensive and focused exchange, to inspire us in our togetherness and to present Lusatia as a film location.

Despite the pandemic, the first edition was successfully held in 2021 with 30 participants and team members. It was an intensive and great two weeks with long workshop days, intensive conversations with previously unknown people, great group discussions about important topics in the industry, exciting debates about film ideas and a worthy final evening in Görlitz.

In the second year, we want to build on our experiences and enter into cooperation with actors in the Czech Republic and Poland. In the coming year, however, we will definitely do so, because networking across national borders is the basic idea of the Academy!

We hope that after the exchange of experiences between the participants, in addition to fun, joy, good experiences and a good time, follow-up projects such as films, collectives, teams and follow-up events will emerge. We would also like to offer the opportunity to get to know the regional conditions and shooting conditions and to find contacts, locations and interesting film themes for future film projects or own production companies.

No. Not directly.

Both initiatives started at about the same time and the names were created in parallel.

We, the „SommerFilmAkademie Lausitz“ are a free initiative of filmmakers from the region and neighbouring metropolises. We „merely“ meet for two intensive weeks in the summer.

The „Saxon Film Academy“ is docked to the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and mainly offers courses over several months.

However, we are both united by the same vision: to show filmmakers the great region, to train them and to promote film projects together.

Furthermore, we are in exchange with the organisers in order to sound out synergies in the future. We welcome the Saxon Film Academy and recommend that you also register there:

How did the similar names come about?
We didn’t make it easy for ourselves when it came to finding a name, and over 15 suggestions ranging from „SommerFilmTage“, „SommerFilmWochen“, „SommerFilmFestival“, with a lot of time to think it over, we finally settled on „SommerFilmAkademie“, simply because it is the most concrete name for our idea. We also see the potential to have the academy take place in other regions and countries in the future.

Görlitz can look back on decades of history as a film city. In addition to Hollywood stars such as Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino, German TV and cinema production teams regularly find their way to the twin cities of Görlitz on the German side of the Neisse and Zgorczelc on the Polish side.

The picturesque medieval town centre, the wild course of the Neisse and the nature in the surrounding area, the culture of the Sorbian people and the proximity to Poland and the Czech Republic with its numerous excursion destinations into the mountains make the region an exciting experimental field for film projects of all kinds.

Smaller to larger Hollywood productions have been realised in Görlitz and the surrounding area. Some of the over 100 productions are:

  • 2022, Torstraße 1
  • 2022, Ze Network
  • 2021, Fabian – Der Gang vor die Hunde
  • 2018, Der Hauptmann
  • 2018, Das schweigende Klassenzimmer
  • 2018, Werk ohne Autor
  • 2014, Grand Budapest Hotel
  • 2014, Monuments Men
  • 2009, Inglorious Basterds
  • 2009, Der Vorleser
  • 2003, In 80 Tagen um die Welt
